I am Peter Massolt, an enthusiastic individual with an interest in working with people and a passion for transferring knowledge -and experience. Born in the Northern Netherlands (Friesland) I have a no- nonsense “down to earth” mentality.
We have a seafaring family. My wife sailed on cruise ships. Both my sons started with Maritime careers and my daughter sailed on cruise ships as sales staff. I am a grandfather to 3 boys and 1 girl. Our family lives in Holland and the UK and I spend time in both countries. I am a permanent UK resident. I first started sailing at sea as deck hand when I was 15 years old and after graduating from Maritime Training Institute "Willem Barentsz" in The Netherlands, sailed as Engineer on many different cargo -and passenger ships. After an interesting career of 20 years working shore side in different roles, I came full circle again in 2006 when I decided to pick up my nautical career where I left it in 1986.
Until my retirement I have had the unique opportunity to make a difference for my employer, when I was Chief Engineer on modern cruise ships, by using my experience gained from several shore-based positions. This multi-disciplinary experience also forms the basis for the trainings offered by A-Team Marine.
When I left my nautical career in 1986, I was very fortunate to work in an advisory role at top executive level in a network of more than 300 corporations who were all active in the offshore oil -and gas industry. I’ve been self-employed for 17 years owning an engineering company and a machine factory. During 4 years I held the position of CEO for a Dutch subsidiary with an office in the USA. I worked as consultant for High Technology Associates in Houston acquiring European customers who wanted to set up operations in the USA.
I’ve been a passionate aviator and held a pilot’s license for over 30 years and flown commercial for 10 years as part-time 1st Officer on Executive Flights within Europe. I was fortunate to be assigned as Chief Engineer for the newbuild of a modern cruise ship in 2020 and sailed on that vessel until my retirement. I was the first to apply my aviation experience in a “performance turn-around” of a cruise vessel in 2010. I introduced proven CRM techniques, competence grading, proficiency checks, skill sets and SOP’s well before the industry started to focus on these techniques.
I recently completed a comprehensive training programme for motormen on board that would enable them to obtain a higher CoC and subsequently become a more valued member of an engineering watch team.
